Beauty hacks and tips for your getaways this summer.
AFTERSUN. A must if you have spent a day sunning yourself, and it oh so soothing.
BRONZY SKIN. Is there anything better? Rather than a matte bronzer, use one with a flex of glitter to bring your skin to life.
CC CREAM. Rather than a heavy foundation, try using a CC cream (especially one infused with SPF) throughout the summer months. It will protect and give the right amount of coverage.
VITAMIN D. Helping to absorb the minerals needed for healthy bones and muscles, the easiest way for our bodies to get Vitamin D is through direct sunlight.
EARS. An area we all seem to miss when applying sun protection, don’t forget the tops of your ears!
FACE MASK. If you are jumping on a long-haul flight, apply a face mask halfway through to counteract any dehydration – your skin will thank you.
GOLDEN HOUR. The perfect time to take that all-important selfie.
HEAT PROTECTANT SPRAY. Your hair is susceptible to sun damage too, so make sure to apply a heat protectant (especially one with UV protection) before heading into the sun. For those with dyed hair, it will help keep your color lasting longer too.
INFORMED. Before any sun exposure, you must be knowledgeable of how best to protect yourself. So make sure you are reading all the right information from the right sources, just as you are doing now!
JOJOBA OIL. As a natural emollient, Jojoba Oil is great for tackling sunburn due to its soothing and moisturizing effect.
KERATIN. Keratin is a naturally occurring protein in your hair, skin, and nails which are great healing agents. The sun, however, can cause the proteins to become damaged which is why you must use a heat protectant.
LIP BALM. Like your ears, we often think our lips are safe from the sun. They are not. Ensure you are using an SPF lip balm in the sunshine too.
MOISTURE. Intense heat is a leading cause of dry, scaly skin. Applying a thick, nourishing moisturizer to both your face and body after any time in the sun will keep your skin looking smooth and supple.
NATURAL. There is no better time than when you are on holiday to embrace all things natural – from your hair to your skin!
OILS. Facial oils are amazing at giving you a glowing, soft complexion, but they are best avoided before any time in the sun as they can cause your skin to burn. Speaking of oils, put down the body oil – I know you want to tan, but it is doing more bad than good, trust me.
PREP. Shaving, waxing, tanning, getting your hair and nails done. The week before any trip away is an ordeal.
QUANTITY. For anyone that needs to know you can’t take any liquids exceeding 100ml per container in your hand luggage!
REAPPLICATION. As a general rule of thumb, SPF needs to be re-applied every 2 hours from the initial application.
SPF. This one does go without saying. Please just use it – SPF 30 as a minimum.
TIME. You only need 15-20 minutes in direct sunlight to get enough vitamin D for your body and also for your skin to start coloring. If you want to stay in the sun for longer, try to avoid the peak hours (between 11 am-3 pm) as this is when you are most likely to burn.
UV RAYS. Too much exposure to UV rays causes premature aging (no, thank you). That is why it is so important to stay in the shade as much as you can.
VERSATILITY. Avoid going over your luggage allowance by packing beauty products that are a bit more versatile – think lipsticks that double up as a blusher, and a bronzer you can use on your eyes too.
WATER. Water is the most important thing your body needs. In the sun, it is recommended you drink at least 1 cup of water every half an hour.
XANTHUM GUM. OK so not technically beauty-related but you can use Xanthhum Gum to make your ice cream! Who doesn’t want that?
YLANG-YLANG. A great anti-inflammatory and perfect for applying to any sunburn you have suffered.
ZINC OXIDE. As a topical protectant, Zinc Oxide is great at protecting your skin from UV rays.
